How The Internet Ruined My Sense of Humour

Sketch shows used to be enough. Obvious gags were ample stimulation to engage my laughing reflex. Now I find myself trawling through blogs and Youtube for hours to find something more bizarre than the last thing I saw, just so I can laugh again.

When I first dabbled with the Internet simple things like customised emoticons amused me. Admittedly, I was 11, and had no understanding of what exactly the Internet was. All I knew was that I could talk to my friends for free as long as I plugged a cable into the phone port and the keyboard was working. These crazy dancing faces soon became tiresome as the novelty wore off. Eventually, as we all did, I found Youtube. This is where my demise began.

I began using Youtube to find clips of old programs I’d forgotten about or to watch music videos. Typical behaviour. Then of course, virals were distributed across the Internet in a comedy frenzy shared by millions. I joined in and laughed at these videos and the people in them, just like everyone else. Harmless fun, I thought. With Facebook came the ability to share Youtube gems with greater ease, I was viewing one a day perhaps. My introduction to twitter furthered this daily count as comedians could show me their personal stash of humourous finds.

Twitter is how I came across my holy humourous grail. A tweet by Robert Popper, a comedic writer and actor (The Inbetweeners, Friday Night Dinner, and Look Around You) showed a video of a woman singing a song titled ‘Pardon Me’. She’d composed it herself and had created a video in which she stares into the camera in a possessed fashion. 100% serious. I cried with laughter. It was linked to his blog; I clicked, and found what I can only describe as a life-changing amount of hilarity. His band of loyal twitter followers find him the most obscure and cringey videos on the Internet and he finds them a home within his blog creating 30 odd pages . These videos include songs, adverts, and self help videos. The more serious they are meant to be, the funnier. I was addicted and checked back everyday for new posts. I needed my daily fix of whatever this comedy genre was.

Unfortunately, it became unrewarding getting cheap laughs from other people’s hard detective work, so I now do the searching for myself. I, daily, do my rounds of comedian’s blogs including looking at David Schneider’s and Peter Serafinowicz’s. Additionally, I thoroughly check links shared on Facebook between my friends and often one funny video leads to another thanks to Youtube’s recommended and related videos. It seems I am now being recommended many an advert from the 80s.

This all sounds (obviously time consuming) fun, but there’s a darker side to it all… I have now noted that my laughter is becoming more and more scarce. I constantly try and out do myself. There are three essential elements that have to now be present for me to laugh: Humans, sincerity in what they are doing, and their total lack of realisation that they are being funny.

I now have a pile of comedy DVDs that are rendered useless by the comedic resources that are still to be found on the internet, a sense of humour that is essentially fuelled by people watching, and I fear the day when I am exposed to the funniest thing I shall ever witness. I won’t be able to out do myself and then I shall laugh no more.
